Ever thought about launching your own blog? Ever wondered what it takes, not only to start up that blog but also to successfully build it over time to make money online or generate a passive income? Clearly, you’re not alone. Millions of people try their hand at blogging, but so few actually ever generate a substantial income from their efforts. So, what does it take to start a successful blog and actually make money online? I suppose that depends on what you consider successful and what you consider making money.
What is Blogging?
Blogging is the act of creating a website (usually written in HTML or PHP) to host one’s blog content. By hosting your own website, you can reach an entirely new audience, both locally and worldwide. Some blogs have large amounts of traffic and receive hundreds, even thousands, of visitors daily. Others may only see a trickle of traffic.
It’s a huge industry today, with professionals and amateurs both vying for the attention of the millions of people who visit blogs each day. Why Blog? A lot of bloggers started out because they wanted to make money from it. They figured that having a blog would bring in readers, which would attract advertisers. While this can happen, blogging success can come without the need to sell anything or produce anything.
Can you Make Money in Online Blogging?
First off, let’s clear up one big misconception about blogging. Even if you’re a beginner and you get started by posting some information for free on your blog, there’s a good chance you’ll still earn money from it over time. If you can provide something in a format that has proven to be highly useful, you’re likely to be successful.
For example, let’s say you run a site that has a contact form at the bottom. That contact form is used by a ton of people who sign up to be notified whenever new posts are added to your blog. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to post a blog like this, either. On the other hand, let’s say you’re one of those people who loves to review products.
In short, the answer is yes. According to a 2010 study by Research I/O, you can make over $2,500 per month by building a blog that reaches over 10,000 unique visitors a month. That’s a pretty nice chunk of change, especially if you’re just getting started with your blog. At the other end of the spectrum, you could potentially make millions by getting a large share of your site traffic to convert to sales.
The catch here is that most people won’t be able to achieve a significant portion of that, at least not right away.
Ways to Make Money in Online Blogging.
In case you haven’t heard, blogging is big business. From celebrities and up-and-coming business owners to regular people just looking for their next income boost, blogging is huge and has grown so much in the last few years that it has become a full-time job in and of itself.
Although it’s great to see so many people generating income from blogging, it’s not all peaches and cream when it comes to making money from blogging. Although many companies can and do support, advise and give advice, there are many things you will need to do on your own to become profitable and successful.
No matter what your personal definition of making money online, you can find some sort of formula that applies to your particular circumstances. From my point of view, it would seem that the best way to make money blogging is to focus on the number of “hits” you get on a particular blog post, so long as those hits add up to a viable income over time.
Not all the advice in the world will help you increase your page views, but working on your SEO, making use of white hat methods to up your blog rankings on search engines, and actually going to the trouble of curating a page that provides useful information about your niche are certainly steps in the right direction. A blog with 500,000 page views that generate an income of $1,000 a month would be considered successful for most of us.
How to Monetize Your Blog
If you have aspirations of earning a good income from your blog, you’re going to need to learn a few tricks and strategies. If you’re planning to start your own blog, then I’m certain you’ve already read about how to monetize your blog with ads.
That’s all well and good if you’re aiming to build a substantial readership that’s going to make you money, but if you’re aiming to generate a more passive income, then you’ll need to learn about generating an income via affiliate marketing.
From a financial perspective, having a website where people can find you is perhaps the most important factor in creating a successful blog. Don’t get me wrong; you’re much more likely to generate a steady flow of income if you’re doing anything, but building a website that you are passionate about is likely to bring in the most revenue.
Spending a small amount of money on your website is the most effective way to attract traffic. However, that’s not the only way to boost your website traffic. Here’s how you can monetize your blog. Contact sites such as Google that have a strong presence on the Internet, and offer a paid subscription for access to advanced search features. There are two general areas that you want to look for – content and search.
Online Courses and Workshops
Online courses and workshops are an ideal way to generate revenue without having to sign up for a course or workshop with a large corporation. These online courses and workshops are a popular way for entrepreneurs, experts, and hobbyists to generate income without the hassles and inconveniences of renting space or having to invest large amounts of money for equipment.
Unfortunately, a large number of people see blogging as a platform that they can build a hobby on and keep doing it indefinitely, yet few have a genuine understanding of how to build a website that helps them make money online. For example, if you run a website providing online courses or online workshops, then that site is a legitimate way to make money from the ground up. However, you have to be careful not to get into the mindset that your website is a method of making money from the very start.
Of course, you’re building a website for one purpose alone – to attract people to your blog, and generate a reader base so you can build a business. But, you need to build your website with the end in mind; rather than just for the sake of creating income.
Not only is it a good choice if you have a lot of content to sell and think you can sell enough of it to make a good income, but affiliate marketing also offers unique opportunities to earn large sums of money for little effort and a bit of salesmanship. How it Works: You set up an affiliate program where you advertise for a product on your own site or on other sites that don’t fit into the normal blog category.
Essentially, these sites agree to advertise your brand and website on their site and in their posts, and you earn a commission on sales that result from their advertising. Whether you’re writing a review on a new TV or learning about building a new website, it doesn’t matter. Just post a link to your website or product and the site will link to it.
For a relatively new blog, you’ll probably need to think about becoming an affiliate marketer for a popular eCommerce site like Amazon or eBay. This is where you’ll earn a commission from the sales made by a visitor to your blog when they make a purchase via their link. Another more complicated way to generate income is to do blogging or simply selling products on your blog.
A very popular way to do this is to set up an affiliate program, where you work with the bloggers and manufacturers who sell your products on your blog to earn commissions.
At its simplest, advertising can earn you anywhere from $2.00 to $20.00 per day depending on where you do your advertising. To start a blog, you’ll need to place some ads on other sites, like Facebook, Twitter, and anywhere else you decide to target.
Getting exposure and generating traffic to your site through advertising and marketing is a big part of any successful blog, but it’s not the only part. You’ll need to place content on your site that people are really looking for. This will generate some initial interest and traffic. You also need to make sure that you can actually write something worthwhile, interesting, and/or entertaining. If you can’t make it happen, your blog will just become another piece of dry white paper floating around in cyberspace, destined to be forgotten by the next person who lands on it.
Normally, we’re not big fans of selling ads on your site. You need roughly a million visitors per year for the large ad networks to take you seriously, and affiliate marketing is almost always more profitable and just as passive. That being said, some niches like recipes, fashion, and news are hard to monetize through many of the other methods mentioned here, and they get LOTS of page views. In that case, putting a few ads on your site can make sense as a supplementary income source.
Consulting / Coaching
Whether you’re already coaching clients or just thinking about getting started, taking your services online can help find more clients and make more money than you thought possible, so I’ve been told. Many traditional jobs have transitioned over to the online space. For most people, making money as an online consultant takes more time to set up than some of the other income streams like advertising and affiliate sales. Other people though, start their websites for the sole purpose of making money coaching or consulting.
While this certainly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, doing a bit of coaching or consulting is an online job that can earn you a surprisingly nice living, even when your audience is small. You can make this work in almost any niche. You just need to know what you’re doing and be confident in the value you are providing to clients.
Selling Freelance Services
Selling online services is one of the easiest ways to generate income. Of course, most people don’t view a freelance job as a source of income. It’s viewed as a favor to an employer, so they’re often free labor or a way to fulfill a vague duty. It doesn’t take a lot of time to set up a freelance website and become a freelance writer. Obviously, you’ll need to provide a service of some kind. But a background in writing and a website could lead you down that path quickly. Do a quick search for “freelance writing” and see what you can find. While blog posts generally aren’t intended to bring in any kind of income, some people view opinion-based blogs as a way to make money online.
Obviously, there are many ways to make money online and one way is to make money by blogging. The difference is in the magnitude of income that you can generate from your blog. The size of your readership, the type of niche that your blog falls into, and many other factors all contribute to determining how much money you can make per month or per year. The more readers, the better. As your readership grows, so does your income. In fact, an effective blog can help you increase your monthly income up to an average of $2000 or more. So, the question that we have to ask ourselves is this: Do you really want to make money from your blog? A small number of successful blogs make money because of social media marketing.
Some links on this site are affiliate links, which means, if you click on a link and you make a purchase through that link, I may make a small commission to help in bringing more valuable content to readers.
